When in campus ministry, one of the “danger zones” for students involved in our ministry was, of all places, going home for the summer. Many of our students came to Ohio University without believing parents and college was a sort of retreat from ungodly family pressure. Some students came from unbelieving homes and found Christ while at college. So to return home and face family tension was a real trial. Sadly, we would always lose a few students over the summer who could not handle the pressure of family and old friends and would turn from their commitment to Christ. The reason for their failure was simple: they were out of fellowship with other Christians. They had not yet learned what I call “The myth of Lone Ranger Christianity”. They had failed to continue in the spiritual disciplines they were practicing while in a Christian environment at college. I believe that same temptation applies to us. With summer upon us, most small groups meet only a few times over the next 3 months. Let me encourage you to meet as often as you can with the members of your small group. Let us take heed to the Apostle Paul’s instruction…
Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another — and all the more as you see the Day approaching. Hebrews 10:25
